Weather Channel Knocked Off Air by Bitcoin Ransomware

The Weather Channel briefly went off air this Thursday as it experienced a ransomware attack for about one hour.

FBI stated the network experienced a ransomware attack with little further detail known at the time of writing.

A ransomware is a type of virus that infects your computer with the aim of holding it hostage in return for bitcoin.

The computer is then meant to be released once the bitcoin payment is made, but it remains somewhat unclear how they would know which computer owner made what payment.

The incident here was over fairly quickly, but in 2017 a ransomware wave spread to 100 countries and crippled the British health service.

The perpetrators of that incident remain unknown, just as here it isn’t clear who was behind this attack on the Weather Channel.
